Comfort Women Statue in Atlanta

Client:

Korean American Association of Greater Atlanta

Description:

I was commissioned to create a piece for Comfort Women Memorial Unveiling ceremony held on June 30, 2017 in Brookhaven, GA.

A comfort woman surviver and activist Ms. Kang II Chul, Brookhaven City Mayor John Ernst and the city councilman John Park were few of many attendees.

As a half Korean and a half Japanese who grew up in Japan myself, this project was tough but very important job to work on personally. My grandparents were active members of the local/regional Korean Association, and I also have known and heard many many many stories of discriminations and struggles they had to go through.

Since this was (and still is) one of the most sensitive topics when it comes to between Korean and Japanese, the ceremony organizer was very considerate and handled every step of our work kindly. It was one of those moments where I found myself in the middle as a half Korean and a half Japanese person!
